Creating a Productive Workspace

DESIGNING YOUR WORKSPACE FOR FOCUSED PRODUCTIVITY

Much of the work you’ll do in college happens outside of the classroom or virtual classroom. These workspaces need to be looked at with your success in mind.

Considering Your Workspace

As you’re putting your workspace together, here’s a few things to keep in mind:

  • Variety is the spice of life!

  • Research shows us working at the same study space is better for thinking of the information you need, for example, during the middle of a test.

  • These places can be in your room at your desk or in bed, outside on a nice day, at your kitchen table, over Zoom with your friends, or in designated safe on-campus study spaces amidst COVID-19.

  • Research also shows us not sitting in the same seat or space during lecture! This even includes your at home online classes.

  • Do you have everything you need at your workspace?

  • Reliable internet access

  • Music

  • How is the lighting? Is it too dark or too bright?

  • What distractions would you find in each of these workspaces? How will you work around them? Some other things to think about:

    • Do you live in a shared space?

    • Are there specific hours in the day you can focus on your school work?

    • Do you have other responsibilities?

Remembering some of these items before settling on your workspace or workspaces will save you time, energy and keep you focused all the way through your next test or even finals.
