Progress is a comment-based feedback system for faculty to provide feedback to students enrolled in their courses.
How to send Trellis Progress Reports
Part 1 - Navigating to Trellis Progress:
1. Sign in to Brightspace.
2. Select the course site for your progress reports.
3. Navigate to “Grades”.
4. Go to “Enter Grades”.
5. Select “Trellis Progress Reports.”
Part 2 - Selecting Students:
1. You can select students in three ways:
- From your class list.
- Using Gradebook filters.
- Uploading a CSV file.
2. Selecting Students from Your Class List:
Click the "Skip to Select Students" button if you don’t want to use the gradebook filter.
A list of all students in the class will appear. You can:
· Select all students.
· Deselect individual students.
· Use the "Deselect All" button to only select specific students on a larger list.
View selected students by clicking the “XX Students Selected” button.
2. Using the Gradebook Filter:
- All gradebook items are available for selection.
- When filtering on multiple items, choose if students meet all criteria or any selected criteria.
- Select your gradebook items and set the minimum and maximum grades.
- A list of students meeting the criteria will be generated.
- To send a progress report to the entire list, click “Select Feedback”.
- To deselect a student, uncheck the box next to their name.
3. If the list is correct, click “Select Feedback” to proceed.
Part 3 - Selecting Feedback and Calls to Action
- Select feedback type(s) and specific feedback item(s).
- Edit Calls to Action, ensuring at least one and no more than five.
- Optionally add additional actions from the available items.
- Add additional comments if needed. These comments will be sent as a separate email.
- Review and suggest the following in additional comments:
- Internships or research opportunities.
- Attendance at outside lectures.
- Insights regarding course grades.
- Suggestions to enhance performance.
- Academic resources.
- Preview your progress report.
- Toggle between university email and additional comments email.
- Make edits if necessary by selecting “Prev: Choose Feedback”.
- Once reviewed, select “Send to x Students”.
- Review the confirmation screen for details on the sent report and next steps.
- Select “Close this Window” to return to the grade book.
How to view previously sent Trellis Progress Reports
Benefits:
- Review previous reports to avoid redundant feedback and track student progress.
- Access all sent reports and download them as needed.
Directions:
- Sign in to Brightspace.
- Select the course site for your progress reports.
- Navigate to “Grades” > “Enter Grades” > “Trellis Progress Reports.” > “View Previous Reports”
- The link will take you to a Salesforce page where you can view all progress reports sent for this class. You can also download the information to a PDF, CSV, or Excel file. (We recommend an Excel file for usability.)
- The file will provide all progress reports sent for that course, including student name, EMPLID, course, feedback type 1, feedback type 2 (if applicable), additional comments (if applicable), date sent, and the date the student acknowledged the progress report.
As an instructor, the timing for feedback can be unique to course, environmental factors and/or class modalities. Whether you’re providing feedback once or multiple times in a semester, students should have time to act on the feedback provided, while keeping in mind important academic dates and deadlines.

- Creating the expectation and communicating your intention to send progress reports can be beneficial for student engagement. You can include relevant details in the course syllabus or post an announcement in Brightspace prior to sending progress reports. An introductory announcement is ready to help you get started.
- Syllabus Statement: “This course utilizes Trellis Progress reports to support your success this semester. At least once this semester, you will receive an email informing you of your course progress (concerns or affirmations) along with recommended actions to help further your academic goals. You can acknowledge receiving your progress report by clicking “acknowledge” in the email body or by viewing your progress report in CatCloud. Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.”
